Wellness and healthy living are becoming a growing priority for many people. According to the 21st annual consumer survey sponsored by the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA)- 72 percent of individuals surveyed claim their primary reason for receiving a massage in the previous 12 months was medical (43 percent) or stress (29 percent) related. Medical reasons include pain relief, soreness, stiffness or spasms, injury recovery, migraines, prevention, pregnancy or pre-natal, and general well-being.
Awareness and education of the benefits of massage are spreading. These tips serve to help you receive maximum benefits from your massage before you even get to the table. Which is great if you regularly take time for massage to get the most for your money. As for those new to massage, these tips may break down remaining barriers keeping you from scheduling your first appointment.
5 Tips to Make the Most of Your Therapeutic Massage:
1.) Eat at least one hour before your massage appointment so your food has time to digest. Having a full stomach can lend to an uncomfortable massage.
2.) Shower beforehand so you are refreshed, relaxed, and clean. Feeling clean can help mitigate body insecurities that can also lend to an uncomfortable massage for both you and the therapist.
3.) Be on time! Massage is meant to be relaxing and it can be difficult or take longer to reach a state of relaxation when you arrive in a stressful rush.
4.) Talk with your therapist about you health conditions and goals and/or problem areas on your body that may need more attention.
5.) If you are sick with fever or have skin irritations such as sunburn it is best to reschedule your appointment.
Many people come to the massage table not knowing what to expect. Get the most out of your treatment by following these tips.
